Notes for Arthur Thomas Fregona
As I recall there were originally three Fregona brothers who came out to this country (South Africa) around the turn of the century. Their names were Frank, Ernest and Dominic. I believe my grandfather's name was Frank.
I have met a Peter Fregona in Ghingindhlovu up the North Coast and Derek Fregona who works for Grindrod Shipping in Durban. I have also heard of various other Fregonas from time to time.
I would be very interested to hear from you and from which brother you are descended. I lecture in Management Information Systems and Computer Practice at the Pinetown Technical College.
I was born in Durban but we moved to the northern Natal town of Vryheid while I was still a toddler and I grew up and went to school there.
My own father Joseph Ernest Fregona passed away in 1985, three months after my mother and recently my aunt Rosa Fregona, a spinster, passed away at Nazareth House in Durban. I also had a younger brother Kenneth who died in an accident so I am afraid I am the last of this particular branch of the Fregonas!
My father often spoke about three brothers named Frank, Dominic and Ernest? who came out to settle in South Africa. I beleieve my grandfather, whom I never met, was named Frank. My father also dabbled in some genealogy and was able to establish that the South African Fregonas originated from a Northern Italian village or "commune" in the province of Treviso called Fregona and that there is also a mountain named Fregona! I think I still have some papers and correspondence which should be able to shed some more light on this particular aspect.
Other Fregonas I ahve heard of are Nigel , Reg, Orlando, Peter Lesley etc, but I am afraid most of them are just names right now and I would be most intrigued and grateful if you could let me have a copy of the Family tree.
I would be delighted to pass on any information that I can glean from this end. I still have some relatives who are apparently quite knowledgeable about the Fregonas and have been meaning to do some research of my own. I wish now that I had taped some of my late aunts' anecdotes!
Apparently one of the brothers started the first dairy in the Hillcrest area while my grandfather started a trading store in a remote area of Northern Natal called Wesselsnek near a colliery.
